Information about pastels and me!

I am known mainly for being a pastel artist and have been producing paintings for over 30 years. I originally painted in oils and acrylics, but about 20 years ago pastels became my passion. In the last few years, I  have been painting in oils and acrylics again, and love doing them. You can see a several of them in the "New" category.

I am also involved in "plein air" painting.  Plein air painting  -- meaning we paint outdoors from real life, is a wonderful and exciting way to paint. Be sure to visit my new gallery page for my outdoor paintings.

I produce somewhere between 75 to 125 paintings per year in sizes ranging from 5"x7" to 30"x40" and have been selling 50 or more paintings per year. My paintings are mostly landscapes with a few still lifes sprinkled in. If you would like to see them in person, visit Frameworks Gallery in Marietta GA, Wrapsody in Blue in Blue Ridge GA and Windrush Gallery in Sedona AZ. I am also represented by Xanadu Gallery in their on-line gallery. I am also currently looking for a couple more galleries in the Georgia and the surrounding Southeastern states area and will let you know when they are available.

Soft pastels are made from the same pigment used for oil paints and are very much like painting with pure pigment. A binding agent is added to create a chalk-like stick, which is applied to a textured surface, usually paper. Available in many vibrant colors, pastels maintain their just-painted look indefinitely. Pastel paintings are fragile and for protection should be framed under glass to avoid excessive handling of the artwork.

There is now a "Southeast Plein Air"

set made by Terry Ludwig --
This set was initially named the
"Marsha Savage Southeast Plein Air Set"

These pastel sets are 60 sticks chosen by me as a base landscape set for the Southeast and East Coast.  This is an honor! It took about 10 months for Terry and his crew to make some of the colors that I wanted -- about 25 of the 60 were not colors that he already had in his inventory. They are now advertised in the Pastel Journal and can be bought directly from me, Terry Ludwig, and some of the mail order/internet art companies. Check the Terry Ludwig site for the price. They are well worth their cost -- and if you are interested, just e-mail me and we will work out the details.

His pastels last a very long time -- they are one of the softest of the pastels. You can create a painting start to finish with just these pastels.   Once you try Terry Ludwig pastels, you will be hooked!
