Marsha
Hamby Savage Historic Landscape
Paintings in Pastel, Oil and Acrylic
I was asked to participate in the 175th
Birthday Celebration for Cobb County held on Monday, Dec. 3, at the new
Cobb Energy Center located in the Galleria / Cumberland area near
Smyrna, Georgia. The Cobb Energy Center is a performing arts center,
but we were glad they wanted to involve the visual arts as well. There
were six artists each producing six paintings of historic parks or
locations of our on choice in Cobb County. We were invited guests at
the night of celebration and they recognized each of us, asking us to
stand and then mingle with the crowd before, during intermission, and
after the program. All 36 paintings were located on easels distributed
on the three lobby levels and as people entered the Center, they were
given cards with all the pertinent information about each painting, the
artist and prices. This was a one-night affair only and quite an
undertaking for such a short "showing!" It was worth every effort
though. It pushed me to paint subject matter that I don't normally
paint and so hopefully growing a little in my own art. So . . . have a
close look at the six paintings I produced. You can click on the image
and a larger one will open for you to see a little better.
Comments are always welcome!
Morning
At A Kennesaw Battlefield *PASTEL* $1,200.00 SOLD
Image Size:
12" x 24"
Outside
Framed Dimension: 21" x 33"
This painting was done from a
photograph taken near Kennesaw Mountain and is one of the many
battlefields located around this National Park. This particular one is
located on Stilesboro Road -- but I have taken a little liberty with
the photograph and made the distant trees look a little further away. I
painted on location here about 20 years or more ago and the photograph
was taken at that time.
The Old
Brawners Hospital *PASTEL*$1,200.00 Image Size:
16" x 20"
Outside
Framed Dimension: 26" x 30"
This
painting was
also done from a photograph provided to me by the City of Smyrna. The
building is in the midst of remodeling at this time to become an Arts
Center for the City. I could not have painted this one on location at
this time. Some liberties were also taken with this photograph as it
would not have made a good painting. I can remember this hospital from
my childhood in Smyrna -- and always thought the building was beautiful!
Bridge
Over Nickajack Creek *OIL* $1,600.00
Image Size:
24" x 20"
Outside
Framed Dimension: 32" x 28"
This was the first painting I
did for this event and is one of my favorite places near Smyrna, GA --
the Concord Covered Bridge Historic District. I did not want to paint
the bridge, so I drove down into one of the near subdivisions so I
could get a view up the creek with just a hint of the bridge showing.
You might not even see the bridge if I didn't point it out. The
painting was done from a photograph and is one of the few oil paintings
I have done lately. I wanted to keep it loose and painterly -- and I
think I accomplished just that. I hope you enjoy the abstract qualities
as much as the "real" scene!
Afternoon
At The Gann House *OIL
*
$1,600.00
Image Size:
20" x 24"
Outside
Framed Dimension: 29" x 33"
This
beautiful old home is still a place of beauty in the Concord Covered
Bridge Historic District. I believe the house is on the Historic
Registry. I started this painting as a demonstration in my gallery in
Blue Ridge, GA and then finished it at home. This was quite an
undertaking for me in oil and I think it was quite successful. This
house was always one I wanted to buy, but . . . quite out of my range.
I am so glad someone has taken the time to restore it and hopefully
enjoys living there. I know I enjoy seeing it every time I drive
through the Covered Bridge and up the hill past it.
Marietta
National Military Cemetery *PASTEL
* $1,500.00
Image Size:
18" x 24"
Outside
Framed Dimension: 27" x 33"
This
painting was done from a photograph -- one of many photographs I took
at the beautiful cemetery located on Roswell Road just off the square
in Marietta, GA. It was a difficult subject because of the
back-lighting . . . the sun being on the other side of the subject . .
. which put the "white" marble monument in shadow! I took liberties
with the color and finally settled on the blue for shadow, with the
inside showing pale yellow because of the reflected light bouncing off
the floor back up into the ceiling and on the interior walls. When
visiting a cemetery of this type -- military -- it makes you feel proud
to live in the USA, but also sad that so many lose their lives
protecting our way of life. Silently walking around and thanking them
was how I felt on this particular day of photographing. I hope you get
the same feeling when looking at the painting.
Nickajack
Creek Under the Comet *PASTEL* $1,500.00
Image Size:
18" x 24"
Outside
Framed Dimension: 27" x 33"
Nickajack Creek is located
near Smyrna, GA and the Concord Covered Bridge Historic District . . .
and this scene is located directly underneath the Silver Comet Trail. I
was standing on one of the rocks beside the old metal structure which
supports the old railroad bed which has become the walking and biking
trail! I started this painting as a demonstration in my Southeastern
Pastel Society meeting, trying to show them how to paint from a
photograph, but with all the knowledge you gain from painting on
location . . . in other words, how to change the photograph to look
more like a plein air painting! I did have to finish it at home, and I
think it is a successful painting, don't you?
